Dr Steve Webber

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Steve is a Geotechnical Engineer with more than 25 years experience in the mining industry.  He has a broad range of experience in the research, consulting and operational environments. He graduated in 1994 with a PhD in Geological Engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Steve has worked in South Africa, Canada, and Australia and was based in Kalgoorlie for around 15 years. He spent 10 years in South Africa undertaking research into mining induced seismicity. His experience has been predominantly underground but he does have significant experience in the design and monitoring of large and small open pits. He has extensive experience in cut and fill mining and airleg mining.

Technical capabilities include:
  • Numerical modelling using Map-3D
  • Ground support design and implementation
  • Processing, analysis and interpretation of microseismic data
  • Design of seismic system layouts.
  • Rockburst and rockfall investigations
  • Formulation and analysis of stoping sequences in hand-help and mechanised mining environments
  • QA/QC of ground support performance
  • Audit preparation – DMP  HIF audits
  • Compilation of Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP)
Steve presented a course on Mine Seismology, for 14 years, at the Western Australian School of Mines as part of the Masters in Mining Geomechanics program.

Steve’s recent experience includes a 5 year stint at the St Ives mine site where he filled the roles of Senior Project Geotechnical Engineer, and Geotechnical Superintendent. He was responsible for 3 underground and 3 open pit mines and supervised a team of 5 Geotechnical Engineers. Prior to joining MineGeoTech, Steve worked as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at the Beta-Hunt nickel mine where he was responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the geotechnical systems.
