Anup Neupane
Geotechnical Engineer
What is your role, and how long have you been at MGT?
I’m currently working as a Geotechnical Engineer in a site support role. I joined the MGT team in August, so I’ve been part of MGT for about four months.
What sparked your interest in this field?
My passion in this field began during a graduate field camp in the Nepal Himalayas, where our student hydropower tunnel design unexpectedly aligned with a professional study and gave me the confidence to pursue this field more seriously.
Share a memorable project story.
While working on a Himalayan hydropower project, we hit a sudden groundwater inflow that threatened operations. Staying calm and assessing it as a perched aquifer helped us manage it safely. Another unforgettable moment was experiencing a landslide-dam outburst during monsoon season, which cut off access and power for weeks — a tough but defining learning experience.
What is a quote that has stuck with you?
I often return to Einstein’s reminder that “in the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity” and the Bhagavad Gita’s teaching to focus on action rather than the outcome.
What advice would you give to aspiring engineering geologists?
If you are looking for roles, alongside job applications, build strong soft skills, and network strategically. If you are already in the industry, always learn from all on-site experts like drillers, laboratory technicians, and surveyors. Their practical knowledge can’t be found in textbooks.
Who in your team would you like to give a shout-out to?
I’m grateful to everyone I’ve worked with at MGT, as each team member has taught me something and they truly are at the top tier of their profession. I really appreciate their support.

Rapid-fire questions
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a kid, I wanted to be a doctor — and then funnily enough adulthood stepped in and said, ‘How about something else instead?’.
How do you take your coffee? Or are you a tea person?
I grew up loving milk tea, but these days in Australia I usually go for a long black without sugar.
What is one (or more) of your favourite hobbies?
I enjoy reading books whenever I get the chance.
Do you have a favourite rock/rock formation/mineral/element?
Pegmatite fascinates me every time with its coarse crystals and striking textures.
